Heat transfers for shirts: choose around the job
There is no single heat-transfer method that is best for every shirt. The right choice depends on the artwork, garment, quantity, personalization, equipment, deadline, and labor your job can support.
This guide compares ready-to-press DTF transfers, heat-transfer vinyl (HTV), screen-printed plastisol transfers, sublimation, and print-and-cut transfer systems. Always follow the instructions supplied with the exact transfer, garment, and equipment you use.

Ready-to-press DTF transfers
In DTF production, artwork is printed onto transfer film, adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink, and the transfer is cured before it reaches the decorator. When you buy a finished ready-to-press transfer, you do not need to own a DTF printer, ink system, powder station, or curing line.
DTF is often useful for full-color artwork, gradients, fine text, complex logos, mixed designs, short runs, repeat jobs, personalization programs, overflow, and backup production. That does not make it universally cheaper, faster, softer, or more durable than every alternative. Compare the fully loaded cost of artwork preparation, transfer production or purchase, pressing, rejects, rework, and deadline risk.
DTF Transfer Zone currently sells finished ready-to-press DTF transfers. Standalone DTF printer film, ink, and adhesive powder are not currently available for purchase.
Heat-transfer vinyl (HTV)
HTV is cut from colored or printed vinyl, weeded, positioned, and pressed. It can be a strong choice for names, numbers, lettering, simple logos, and specialty finishes that are specific to vinyl. Labor rises as artwork becomes more intricate, uses more colors, or requires more layers and alignment.
Screen-printed plastisol transfers
A supplier screen prints plastisol ink onto transfer paper for later heat application. This can fit repeat designs and larger runs when the supplier’s setup, color-separation requirements, minimums, storage needs, and press instructions match the job. It is different from printing directly onto shirts on your own screen-printing press.
Sublimation
Sublimation turns compatible dye into gas so it bonds within suitable polyester fibers or a compatible coating. It commonly fits light-colored polyester garments and purpose-made sublimation blanks. It is not a universal solution for cotton, dark garments, or uncoated products.
Print-and-cut and transfer-paper systems
These methods depend heavily on the exact printer, ink, paper or film, cutter, carrier, garment, and manufacturer workflow. They can fit certain desktop, specialty, or short-run projects, but compatibility and wash performance must be proven with the complete system—not assumed from the method name alone.
How to choose the right method
- Start with the artwork. Count colors, gradients, fine detail, personalization, and specialty effects.
- Confirm the garment. Record fiber content, color, seams, coatings, stretch, and heat sensitivity.
- Define the run. Separate one-off work, short runs, repeat programs, restocks, and larger production.
- Count buyer-side labor. Include cutting, weeding, layering, alignment, pressing, cooling, peeling, QC, packing, and rework.
- Check the deadline. Separate transfer production time, carrier transit, pressing time, and the customer’s due date.
- Test before scaling. Use the exact transfer, garment, press, platen, settings, and care process planned for production.
Pressing ready-to-press DTF transfers
For the DTF transfers currently sold by DTF Transfer Zone, a practical starting point is 300–320°F for 10–15 seconds with heavy, even pressure, followed by an immediate hot peel. Instructions supplied with the order take priority. Test unfamiliar or heat-sensitive garments before production, and do not raise temperature or time blindly to solve an adhesion problem.

Troubleshooting without guessing
- Confirm the transfer and garment are the materials you intended to use.
- Check actual platen temperature and pressure across the full design area.
- Keep seams, collars, zippers, and pockets from preventing even contact.
- Verify time, temperature, pressure, and peel timing against the supplied instructions.
- Test one item and inspect it before starting the full run.
- Document the proven setup for repeat orders instead of relying on memory.
