DTF adhesive powder is part of transfer manufacturing; it is not a product that should be sprinkled onto a garment before pressing. In a direct-to-film production line, a compatible hot-melt powder is applied to freshly printed ink on PET film, excess powder is removed, and the remaining adhesive is cured under controlled conditions. The finished transfer is then pressed to a compatible garment using the transfer supplier's instructions.
DTF Transfer Zone currently sells finished, ready-to-press DTF transfers. We do not currently sell standalone adhesive powder, printer film, or DTF ink. This guide explains where powder fits in the production process so print shops can evaluate quality, safety, equipment, labor, and whether outsourcing finished transfers is the better operating decision.
Where adhesive powder fits in the DTF process
- Print onto compatible film. DTF inks are printed in the required layer order onto transfer film using a maintained printer and the equipment maker's current workflow.
- Powder the wet ink. A powder that is compatible with the ink, film, garment use, and curing system is applied while the printed ink is still wet. Coverage should stay on the printed area, and loose excess should be removed according to the powder and equipment instructions.
- Cure the printed film. The powdered print is cured with controlled equipment. Temperature, dwell time, airflow, and distance vary by material and machine, so the powder, film, ink, and equipment manufacturers' instructions control this stage.
- Inspect the finished transfer. The transfer should be checked for even adhesive coverage, contamination, incomplete cure, scorching, edge buildup, and handling damage before it reaches a garment.
- Press the finished transfer. Press settings come from the finished transfer and garment guidance, not from a generic powder article. For DTF Transfer Zone's current sold transfers, the standard starting point is 300–320°F for 10–15 seconds with heavy, even pressure and an immediate hot peel. Order-specific instructions and testing on unfamiliar or heat-sensitive garments take priority.
What not to do
- Do not apply DTF adhesive powder directly to a garment as a substitute for a properly manufactured transfer.
- Do not heat-press the garment before printing and then attempt to print a design over powdered fabric.
- Do not use general-purpose craft, screen-printing, or industrial powders unless the manufacturer explicitly supports the complete DTF system being used.
- Do not treat one temperature or cure time as universal. Powder, film, ink, oven, shaker, room conditions, and production speed all affect the process.
- Do not use visible powder coverage as the only quality check. Cure, storage, contamination, pressure, and garment compatibility can still affect the result.
Safety and process controls for in-house production
Adhesive powder is a production material. Before operating a powder-and-cure line, review the current Safety Data Sheet and manufacturer instructions for every material and machine in the system. Use the ventilation, housekeeping, personal protective equipment, fire-prevention, storage, and waste controls required by those documents and by applicable workplace rules. Keep food and drinks out of the production area, limit dust migration, and train operators on spill and exposure procedures.

When outsourcing ready-to-press transfers may make more sense
Owning a DTF printer is not the only way to sell DTF-decorated apparel. A shop can keep artwork, customer relationships, pressing, and fulfillment in-house while outsourcing transfer manufacturing. Compare the fully loaded cost of both routes rather than comparing powder price with transfer price.
- In-house production cost: printer, shaker or manual powder handling, curing equipment, ventilation, ink circulation, cleaning, maintenance, failed prints, labor, materials, storage, training, downtime, and quality-control time.
- Outsourced-transfer cost: finished transfer price, production timing, shipping or pickup, file preparation, receiving inspection, pressing labor, and supplier reliability.
Outsourcing can be useful for overflow, equipment downtime, short runs, complex color work, capacity spikes, or shops that want to validate repeat demand before investing in a full production line. In-house production can make sense when volume, staffing, space, environmental controls, maintenance discipline, and margin support the equipment.
